Review : AK's ''The Weathering Magazine'' Issue 2 - DUST

If you guys could recall, I made a post last month, reviwing one of the wonderful book published by a great company ( Link HERE  ). AK interactive has just release the 2nd issue of their '' Weathering Magazine '' and as soon as it hit the stores, I just jumped and bought 3 copies straight away ( the other 2 are for my friends if anybody wants any ). This 2nd issue is named '' DUST '' and was released in the third week of October. Because I was busy, I couldn't write a proper review until today so I do apologize for my delay in writing a review.

In this issue, Ak showed a even greater variety of methods (compare with Rust ) to apply dusts on a model, from heavily dusted helicopter in use in Afghanistan to a dusty and dirty figure, from simple trick as airbrushing on paint like Tamiya Tan to the complicated tricks of combining all the products ( washes, filters, pigments) to produce a ultra-realistic effect.

The magazine is printed on a very high quality glossy heavy paper, and is 63 pages in full color.

First you got this on the cover -

And once you turn the page, you are greeted with a wall of text from the chief editor himself ( I didn't take any photo of it, sorry ) ... and then after that, you will come to the contents

Again with the model but Im not really complaning about this one ... she's hot.. especially since she's holding a gun ( chicks + guns = hotness, u know hehehe )

and after that you will get straight into the first chapter -

'' Chopper Dusting '' is basically how an aircraft can get dirty when it is in service in a really really dusty and sandy area, in this case, a Black Hawk used by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment ( Airborne ) in Afghanistan. In this chapter, AK showed step by step in using acrylic paints and enemal washes to create a well used aircraft operating in very dusty and sandy conditions. The chapter cover how to replicate dust sticking to the matt paint finish and how it collects on areas that are frequently lubricated with oils and greases.

In Chapter two '' Panzer Grey and Dust '' -
They talked about how to achieve a realistic dusty finish in on a tank. They took a Tiger I, somewhere in the eastern front, as a subject. They talk about how to acheive a various down of dusty finishes on the tank, and where dust would be thin  and where it would be thick. I found this chapter very useful and very good as most tanks would be dusty in this kind of way, espeically tanks operating in climates like the russian summer.

Chapter 3 '' Space dust '' is all about how a sci-fi model offer a wide range of weathering potential.

The chapter talks about how to achieve a fairly used space hardware, with space dust and everything in between. Since this is sci fi, creative potential is high and too many a option are avaiable but they chose to go not too over board with a ton of dust but instead, showed how to make a suitable layer of dust using a minium amount of materials.

I wouldn't actually say this article is a chapter since it is only one page but this is one page that seriously helped me. TBH, I knew how to apply a dusty finish by airbrusing acrylic paint on a model but never knew about using ENAMELS to make it. Now I do ...

They choose to use Humbrol for the article and they couldn't have choose a better paint for the job .

'' Mucking up a Merkava'' is the title for chapter 4 and in this one, they talk about how to achieve a really really dusty and dirt-filled, dirt-stained tank that have undergone extensive services and opereations by using ACTUAL dirt as one of the materials

I find this article very interesting and eye-catching and actually useful for modellers who aim to work on vehicles that have been used and abused in numerous operations and humid, dry and sandy climates.

Again, this is another article too short to be a chapter and this article is aimed for those diorama builders.

Titled '' Dusty Cobble Stone Road'', they talk about how to get a realistic dusty Stone road and not only just dust, they also talk about how to enhance the texture of the stones as well.  I really really like this article as they show how to acheive a nice dusty road in a matter of a few steps ( namely in 5 ) and with only 4 different materials.

Following this article is another Article for a diorama as well, with a title '' A dusty Diorama''.

What interesting about this article is that they actually used real sand ( fine sand ), real pebbles, some fibrous hairs ( don't ask me where they got the hairs from, that was the very first question I asked myself as well when I saw them ) and some dried lichen. Also to be of noted is the use a modelling clay as a base and for the sand to stick onto.

Chapter 5 '' Dust brings a tanker to life '' shows how some modellers forget to weather the crew figure according to the settings in which they weather their vehicles.
The chapter shows how to bring life to the figure using both enamel and acrylics for dust effects and how a figure weathered accordingly to the environment will add a ton of extra realism to the entire model or diorama.

The article following this is named ''Dusting Tiger Tracks '' which basically shows how to put on tracks on the tiger tank coverd in chapter two.
Quite a lot of materials is involved with this materials but the explanations are clear and easy to understand. Another great article that would be useful all the time if one if fond of making tanks ( like me ).

The next article to follow is an article named '' Airbrushing Dust and Dust Washes ''.

Basically, this is quite similar to the way we spray enamel and acrylics to produce a dusty finish but instead, they talk about using enemal washes and white spirit and another peculier instrument  ( namely a artist fibre pencil ) to get a nice dusty finish. This method has been covered in Chapter 2 as well but this article covers in details about this method.

For the next article, it is titled ''VK4502 Dust and Dirt'' and they talked about how they get the dirt and dust that covered the VK4502 that was featured in the very first issue's very first chapter.
To be of note in this article is the use of Modellling product such as AK's Gravel and Sand fixer, some leaves ( not the big ones, the diorama accesories ). This articles is more about how to get a dirt ( or clumps or dirt) effect on a vehicle instead of a dusty layer and how to fix it properly on the model.

The next articles is kind of a like a combination of everything that has been said previously ( I beleive).

Basically, this articles shows how to get dust and dirt effect using every weapon in a modeller's arsenal: acrylic, enemal, enamal washes, pigments, filters and other products such as AK wet effect fluids. A particular part that is of great interest ( to me that is ) is the part where they talk about how a heavily dusted surface makes a great base for the dried mud and how pigments, applied correctly, create a cool looking and ultra-realistic cracks in the dried and caked mud.

Following this is a section dedicated to a fine selection of real life reference photos, just like they did in the first issue.
After this, we come back to another Chapter, Chapter 6, titled '' Br39 Before and After ''. Basically this is a chapter that shows, in great details, how a locomotive can get dust and dirt with all the oil, greases and cargo on board. The model used is Rivarossi Analogic H0 scale br39.

This chapter shows how to achieve some uber realistic weathering effects without the need to disassemble any parts to change a toy looking mass-produced model locomotive into a real looking one.

The Final Chapter, Chapter 7 is named dusty ground and they showed how to make a dried and dusty diormama from the ground up and with dust and dirt effects on the DIORAMA instead of the model.
The example setting they choose was Tunisial; which is a landscape of not purely desert sand but also comprises of different types of soil, rocks and vegatation. Basically, this chapter talks about how to make a real life enviorment with different kind of shades of soil and type of pebbles and rocks.

This book is a must have in my opnion. Packed with invaluable techniques for recreating all manner of dusts and not to mention beautiful photos, detailed "how to" information, and containing real-life examples, too.

VERDICT - HIGHLY, EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED.

Review : AK's ''The Weathering Magazine'' Issue 1- Rust

A month ago, I was reading the latest ( then) issue of SMMI- Scale Modelling Military International and my eyes falls on a advert. To be honest, there was a hot model in advert, wielding a welding-torch and looking all dirty and greasy and that caught my eye ( LOL ) so I read through the advert and I couldn't be more glad that I saw that advert.

It was a advert for a magazine, dedicated directly to weathering, and the publishers are no other then the famous AK interactive. The name of the magazine also caught my attention; the name was just pure and simple '' The Weathering Magazine''. So, as soon as I got back home from work, I did a little research about that said book and found some reviews and I felt like trying out the book myself. And boy oh boy, I was right to buy it.

This is what you see on the cover -

Photobucket

And, naturally, turning the cover, you will see the contents various ads and bits and bobs that you would normally see from a magazine.

The very first, you could say , Chapter comes into view like so -
Photobucket

Oviously, as you can see from the title, they showed a step by step process of how to rust a prototype tank that went trough trials and just abandoned and sitting in a corner of a factor ( Porsche's factory to be exact). This chapter deals with how to make rust streaks of various shapes and sizes and how accumlated rain drops, which leads to a pool, can rust metal products.

The 2nd chapter tells you how rust can happen and how to acheieve rust on a Bare steel body
Photobucket

The 3rd Chapter shows to acheive some hastily attached  armour without any paint on a vehicle can rust. This chapter also tells you how to achieve milling effect, complete worker's marking and wrting; the typical white chalk u would see on doors or frames when carpenters working on them, you know Photobucket

The fouth Chapter depict how a railway car can undergo rust after prolong usage and exposed to the elements-
Photobucket

In the fifth one, you would see a chapter showing you how rust can occur on a ship currently in service and through heavy seas.
Photobucket

I find this chapter exceptionally useful because they cover almost everything in there, from paint fade to rusts from scratches made by the anchor, and also along the anchor chains.

The sixth one teach you how to make a ultra-realistic, three dimensional chip effects that is complete with rust forming in that chipped paint area.
Photobucket

This chapter is very, and I mean Very, interesting as well as it tells you how to achieve such realism by using pigments in a manner similar to the salt technique.

In the 7th one, you will see some simple steps how to achieve that old, used, metal fittings on furnitures, doors and so on so forth. In this case, the example is some metal fittings on some old barn doors.
Photobucket

In the next one, you will see how to naturally rust metal parts. Of cos, the rust process is sped up using some chemicals and in this one, AK promotes their own product ( naturally ) to show some easy and simple steps how real metal parts can be rusted. However, I have to give it to AK for not turning a blind eye on the other product as well, as they review other products which can naturally rust metals ( this is covered in a diferent chapter )
Photobucket

The 9th chapter shows you how easy it is to make some small, localized chip paint effects and rust streaks and rust effects from those chip paints. Apprently, all you need is a good eye and some proper colour.
Photobucket

In this chapter, you will see a step by step tutorial of how rust can occur on a modern vehicle. The title says ''Less is more'' and what they say in this chapter is that how one can achieve a great looking model with a moderate amount of effects.
Photobucket

Chapter 11 is titled '' Sand Blown Old Rusty Steel '' and it shows you how the adverse condition of the desert can rust away metallic .
Photobucket

You will find quite a number of references photos in chapter 12 and there are some descriptions on the photos that actually helps understanding the concept of rusting more.
Photobucket

Chapter 13 will shows you how an abandoned vehicle will slowly rust ups and how the rusts will show among the faded original colours of the body.
Photobucket

And last but not least, in this chapter, they talked about how each and every products and paints has their own use in rusting. They also reviews some of the products and give some shout-outs on which brand has which kind of rust colour and which brand's colour is better then which. Yes, I know what you are going to ask, what is that woman doing in there. To be honest, I don't have a clue, i guess AK deem it to put in as something to be eye catching or something, but quite strangely and frankly, Im don't really like their idea of putting in something like that.

Photobucket

This book is a must have in my opnion. The only draw back is those random appearces of those models ( as in, human, woman models ). I mean, if I wanted to see stuffs like this, I would have bought myself a Playboy mag. The price is not bad as well, for £8.99, you get a nice magazine, that actually, teach you how to do stuffs. Normally, ''how to '' modelling mags are around and above £15 (which I never bother buying cos of the price ).

VERDICT - HIGHLY, EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED.

Why The Bird Has been InActive lately

Hello There Folks. I guess its about time I start explaining what's going on with my life and WHY in the hell I have been so inactive when it comes to modelling and blogging SINCE early April.

Well, folks, The answer is pretty Simple. Yours Truly has finally land himself a job. After being Jobless for 1 whole year after graduating in 2011, I have a job.

But don't get too excited, Its just a small time job. I got in a receptionist in a Branch of a Hilton here in London. Started from Apr 10 and I was swamped with training and full time that I couldn't even touch my models.

To make it worse, OR better, there was an opening for a night auditor position and I knew I had to take it when an opportunity arise. Sure a night shift really messes up my time table but as a night auditor, I get paid more and also, I can have a better position to put down on my CV. Not to mention, this can also secure me a good foot hold IF I wanted to venture out into the Finance field.

So basically, I had to leave my house at 9pm, get back home at 8 am and had to sleep and the circle continues. That is why I have been SOOO quite these days.

But rest assured, I haven't quite the hobby yet and yes, I still build and with the money coming in, I plan to build more.

In the mean time it's taking me to adjust to my working life, I sincerely apologize for my lack of activity and I hope you guys will understand and bear with me in this time of adjustment.
Thank you guys and love you all.

2012 MECHA CONTEST Extended for 30 more days !!

Dear Participants of the 2012 MECHA CONTEST -
2012 MECHA CONTEST will be extended until the end of July. As Kamm and Sneeper, the brains and organizer of the Mecha Contest , have decided the most awaited contest has been moved for everyone's delight.

The Main reason to extend was just that there have been a number of confusion with the venue change and everything became kind of not very convenient for all the participants for  2 week and Kamm, Sneeper and the rest of the gang thought we should extend it until the end of July as a mean of compensation for the inconvenience caused by the events of early may.

SO the contest is now extended a further 30 days until July 31.

That's good news for all modelers and aspiring ones to finish up their in-progress wips OR make a new fast one. Just be sure to send those entries and finished those in time. You have more than a month to enjoy your WIPs..So keep the ball rolling. Keep on churning out those  awesome kits and we will be waiting for your outstanding entries!!

Good Luck and more power to all participants!! Interested parties can still join the contest. There are lots of great prizes to be won.So what are you all waiting for.... SIGN UP and enjoy!!

You can check out and visit our new ''HOME''  -

Build Off With a great Sculpting Engine

Hello Dear readers ...... Welcome to another Blog post from the hummingbird. I am terribly sorry (again) for my delays in updating my WIPS and few posts on my blog. Life is hitting me hard and having some family issues that drained my metal energy which also sap my mojo and  physical energy.

Anyway, today I would like to blog about what I have been doing, Gunpla-wise. As you can see from my title, I am having a build off with a great, great, great sculpting and SBing modeler.

That such modeler goes by the name of TheHelmosEngine. His works can be seen on this blog, which he named Hanger03 . Here are some example of this finished work  (LINKS ARE IN THE PICTURES PLS CLICKED ON THEM ) -

He is the modeler that sculpted the entirely new kit using the MG Zeta, which is the very same kit that Kamm is working on. Don't worry, I will link you guys to Kamm's videos -

Part 1 of the Drehksturm - LINK
Part 2 of the Drehksturm - LINK
Part 3 of the Drehksturm - LINK

From Kamm's videos, you can see how Amazing this guys .... he is just awesome. Going against this guy won't be an easy task. The funny thing is, while I am admiring his sculpting skills, he finds my mechanisms and gimmick mods inspiring, so we both can benefit each other from this.

You might be wondering how the hell we decided to have a build off, well, it wasn't anything special as I was building a Legend and he is working on a Providence so we thought it would be cool and a very nice addition to the MAC forum to have our Build-Off in the Workshop and then Boom, we are having a build off.

Here is the link to our Build-off Thread on the MAC form - ''Official Build-Off Thread''  be sure to check in there as TheHelmosEngine builds at a very very fast speed. you can always check the works he does on his blog - Hanger03.

This is really exciting for me and I am up against one of the great modeler of MAC, a great sculptor and I am kinda worried he will beat me (hands down) in details and shapes and sculpting but rest assured, I am countering his every move with mechanism mods :P.

Wish me luck....

OH by the way, I am also having a Build-Off with a certain Monkey of Gunpla ... the reason he is called Monkey is that HE can copied up to 90% of the original work, you know, monkey see monkey do ?? hehehe.... but that's a story for another day.

I will be updating my Legend here on the blog as usual so don't forgot to tune in.
Thank you All for reading and really appreciate the support. You guys are the best.
Till next update, be sure to Stay Tuned.

2012 Mecha Contest - FAQ

HERE BE THE LIST OF THE GENERAL FAQ OF THE 2012 CONTEST

GENERAL:

Q: Can I enter both the Zaku Group Buid & the 2012 contest if I start my entry
after January 1st?

A: Yes! You can enter both.

Q: Can I use a pre snapped kit prior to Jan 1, with no modifications?
A: Yes! We appreciate some modellers snap fit their kits when they get them. We do ask for a different approach when it comes to resin though please see rule 4.

Q: Can I work together with another modeller?
A: Yes you can! All we ask is that you clearly state you are building with another modeller as well as where the prize will be sent if the entry was successful. (Multiple prizes will not be awarded)

Q: Can I submit multiple entries?
A: Yes! Multiple entries are welcome but all must have been started after the 1st of January 2012. Please ensure you create an Entry thread for each of your entries.

Q: Can I use the same kit I submit for one category (ie. Modified) and submit it in another (ie. Diorama)
A: Yes! You can use one kit for more than one category but the entry must adhere to the rules of the separate category, for example. Entry “A” was entered into Modified Plastic. This entry was then placed on a diorama which was started after January 1st 2012, this would be accepted.

Q: Can I use a pre painted kit that I repaint?
A: Yes! All we ask is that you provide us with an entry picture showing the model before the repaint. See rule 1.

Q: Can I include a base with any kit in any category?
A: No! The only category that includes a base is the Diorama Category. Your entry will not be accepted into any other category with a base. You may use an action base for posing your kits but we will only judge the model kit entered.

Q: Can I switch my prize for something else?
A: No! sorry.

Q: Do I have to keep a WIP of my entry?
A: If you are entering the CONCEPT category you must create a WIP thread. We encourage all members to create a WIP thread so that other members may contribute and encourage to your work.

MODIFIED PLASTIC:

Q: Can I use a pre snapped kit prior to Jan 1, with no modifications?
A: Yes! See rule 1. We ask that your kit has no changes.

Q: Can I use parts from non mecha kits?
A: Yes! When scratch building or modifying a kit we encourage participants to think outside the box. We only ask your kit remain in the “mecha” theme. See “Definition of Mecha” (above rule 1)

Q: Can I include accessories with my kit, do they have to be modified too?
A: Yes! You may use any accessories for your kits in this category. They do not have to be modified, just the model kit itself. Please see rule 6.

Q: Can my entry be all kit bash with no scratch building?
A: Yes! You may use parts from other models and you are not inclined to scratch build. Although we do encourage it.

RESIN MODIFIEID/PAINTED:

Q: Can I pre-clean up the parts before Jan 1?
A: This subject is quite open in nature. We ask that your Resin kit be completely new with no clean up although we will allow entries that have minor clean up. Please see rule 4.

Q: Can I inventory and open the parts before Jan 1?
A: Yes! As long as the model kit/conversion remains in its original state of purchase.

Q: Can I use a kit that’s only pined together before Jan 1? No paint or clean up done.
A: Generally the answer for this one is no. But exceptions may be made. Please contact Kamm or Sneeper1980 see rule 1 and click their name.

Q: Can I include a base with my kit, if the kit did not come with one?
A: A base for your kit would place your entry into Diorama. But you may enter your model into both categories. Provided your diorama base was started after January 1st.

Q: Can I include a base with my kit if it was included in the kit?
A: Depending on the base this would move your entry into the diorama category. Again if you are unsure feel free to ask one of the organisers. See rule 1.

OOB PAINTED:

Q: Can I use a pre snapped kit prior to Jan 1, with no modifications?
A: Yes! See rule 1. We ask that your kit has no changes.

Q: Can I remove seam lines?
A: Yes! You may clean up seam lines in fact we do encourage it a lot! Please do this after January 1st see rule 1.

Q: Can I add/remove panel lines?
A: No & Yes! The kit must not be changed physically by adding (such as scribing or aftermarket parts) but if you would like to fill in panel lines that is fine.

Q: Can I leave parts of the kit off? (example ankle guards, shoulder armor, etc.)

A: Yes! So long as the kit hasn’t been physically altered see rule 5.

Q: Can I leave sections unpainted?
A: This is obviously a tough question. We would like the majority of entrants to paint everything on their model but this might not always be the case. Refer to rules 1 & 5. And if you are still unsure please pm one of the organisers.

Q: Can I paint a base to go with my kit?
A: No! A base would make this kit a Diorama entry.

Q: Can I weather the kit to fit paint weathering? (chip edges, ad blaster holes etc.)
A: So long as the kit isn’t physically changed see rule 5. Then weathering via washes, paint chipping, pastels, pigments etc is completely fine.

Q:
Can I Mix unaltered parts from other kits? (Blasters, weapons, accessories)
A: No! This would make your entry a Modified Plastic Category

Q: Can I add lights or effects to my kit that do not alter the kits plastic?
A: If LEDs or other lighting effects are included with the kit you may use them. You may also use LEDs or other lighting if the kit houses such effects. You may not alter the kit to fit the previously mentioned effects.

CONCEPT:

Q: What does 70% Scratch Built mean?
A: For the concept category you must create from scratch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scratch_building). This maybe using Plasticard (pla plates), modelling clay (Sculpting putty) or anything that will help you to create your masterpiece. After creating a WIP (work in progress) thread on the forum, if you are unsure please contact a member of staff.

Q: How do I know if my entry is 70% scratch built?
A: This percentage is a very loose way of creating your entry. You will be required to create a WIP thread on the forum and at any stage if you are unsure your entry does not meet the requirements you must contact an organiser. We will review your entry and give feedback immediately!

Q: Can I use parts from other models to create my entry?
A: Yes! But you must scratch build the majority of your entry. See rule 9.

Q: What if I create a diorama or base for my entry?
A: Your entry will not be judged on the base or diorama.

Q: What if my entry isn’t 70% scratch built, would it still be accepted?
A: Exceptions may be made due to this category being so diverse. We ask you contact and organiser if such an issue should surface.

Q: What if I build my entry from designs or concept art not designed by myself?
A: This would be completely fine, we only ask you create a WIP (work in progress) thread on the forum to display your build progressing. Please see rule 9.

DIORAMA:

Q: Is there a size limitation on Diorama base entries?
A: No! There are no size limitations but you must provide use with enough evidence to show your started the entry after January 1st 2012. See rule 1.

Q:
Can I use multiple kits in my entry?
A: Yes! You may use multiple kits in your entry but you must provide sufficient evidence to show the models were started after the start date. See rule 1.

Q: What if my entry has Resin and Plastic kits? Is this allowed?
A: Yes! You may combine resin and plastic kits into your diorama entry.

Q: Can my entry have non mecha related model kits such as figures?
A: Yes! This is the only category where figures or models from other “genres” are allowed. We will be judging your entry based upon its mecha content and story.

Q:
What if my diorama has moving parts or lighting effects? Can we submit video evidence?
A: No! Unfortunately due to the number of entries we will receive the only way we will be able to judge your entry is via pictures. We hope this will be sufficient to showcase the best of your work.
